The Benefits of CBD Oil For Anxiety

Of all of the empirical and anecdotal benefits of CBD oil, perhaps the most widely accepted is its anti-anxiety capability. In recent years it has become enormously popular as an alternative to prescription drugs and has helped countless people avoid the potential side effects that these medications are known to cause.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is the more common name for cannabidiol, one of over 100 compounds found in the cannabis plant. It’s classified as a cannabinoid, and one of the reasons that it has grown in popularity is that it offers all of the benefits of marijuana without the “high”, as it doesn’t contain any THC.

Cannabidiol is extracted from the cannabis or hemp plants using various methods, the most popular of which are CO2, hydrocarbon, dry ice, olive oil and ethanol. It is then typically filtered, and the oils fall into three different categories: raw, decarboxylated and filtered, with the later being the most potent and therefore the most popular.

As you are probably already aware, there are endless products on the market containing CBD oil in various concentrations, including tinctures, gummies, roll ons, capsules and isolates. But perhaps one of the most convenient ways of getting your daily dose of CBD oil is the vape pen.

The CBD Oil Vape Pen and its Anti-Anxiety Benefits

While all high quality CBD oil products offer similar health benefits, the CBD vape pen is ideal for those on the go, as you can just take it out and use it as needed. They don’t require any charging and they are also usually disposable when done with the product. CBD vapes often contain terpene blends that add both aroma and flavor, making them that much more enjoyable.

So how exactly does CBD help with anxiety? Well, the human body has something called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that plays a role in everything from pain to mood to memory to sleep. There are cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) and they not only react to the body’s own internal cannabinoids, but external cannabinoids as well.

A well balanced diet and regular exercise are two ways to naturally enhance your body’s endocannabinoid system. Similarly, phytocannabiniods like CBD oil can have a positive effect as well.

Although CBD does not have strong binding affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors like THC does, it acts indirectly to reduce anxiety and produce all of its other benefits. Specifically, it inhibits Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH). This creates higher levels of an endocannabinoid called Anandamide, which is called the “bliss molecule” and is directly involved in both pleasure and motivation, among other functions.

So this is one of the theories that explain how vaping CBD oil helps with anxiety, stress and similar conditions. It boosts your body’s supply of feel-good anandamide, which in turn boosts your mood and sense of well-being.

What Studies Have Been Done?

There are many studies that support the use of CBD oil for anxiety. A 2015 study concluded that CBD was shown to be effective in “reducing anxiety behaviors relevant to multiple disorders including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD and SAD…:”

A 2013 study conducted on chronically stressed mice also yielded positive results as did one a year later, which showed that “CBD exhibited an anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in animal models discussed”

So as you can see, science supports the use of CBD oil for anxiety as well as for a variety of other conditions such as pain management, insomnia and arthritis. In fact, the FDA recently approved a medicine for treating epilepsy which contains CBD derived from the cannabis plant. If that’s not evidence of its efficacy I don’t know what is.

If you’re currently taking anti-anxiety medication, or even if you aren’t, talk to your doctor about CBD oil and see if it is an option for you.
